A Study on Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis and Anthropometric Measuring Methods Estimating Body Fat Percent in Taiwanese Female Participants

Background &Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the difference of the measuring accuracy between foot-to-foot bioelectrical impedance (BIA) analysis and anthropometric measurement estimating the body percentage in healthy Taiwanese female participants. Method: 107 healthy Taiwanese female (Age: 30.4±14.8, Height: 160.6±6.0cm, Weight: 59.6±9.4kg, Body mass index: 23.2±3.8kg/m^2). The study utilized the body fat percentage estimate equation developed by Deurenberget al. using the foot-to-foot commercial bioelectrical impedance analysis device for estimating body fat percent (BF%) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measured result to identify normal weight group (BMI<24kg/m^2), over weight group (BMI ≥24kg/m^2), and all weight group by correlation coefficient analysis, regression analysis, Bland-Altman analysis and t-test. Results & Conclusions: Anthropometric measurement in normal weight, overweight, and all weight groups in BF% and DXA correlation coefficient were 0.80, 0.75, and 0.88. BIA was 0.82, 0.79, and 0.91. Mean difference between anthropometric measurement and DXA were -1.2%, 95% with confidence interval of -11.6% to 9.2%. BIA were 1.5%, -6.7% to 9.7%. When comparing the BF% mean difference between anthropometric and BIA measurements with DXA measurements, normal weight group and all weight group all showed a significant difference (P<0.05). By utilizing the foot-to-foot mode BIA, the estimated BF% showed a better estimate when comparing the anthropometric measuring method in healthy Taiwanese female participants.
