During the last few decades, Taiwan Hand Puppet Theater (布袋戲, Budaixi, BDX), a representative Taiwanese folk performance form, has become an important symbol of Taiwanese culture and identity. This paper presents a preliminary survey study of local people's views on BDX and discusses BDX's modern evolution. Most of the survey respondents were children when BDX was in its decline during the 1970s and 1980s. Although most of the respondents do not watch BDX often for entertainment as adults, they all feel that BDX is an important part of Taiwanese culture that should be promoted and preserved. After presenting and discussing the respondents' comments and our observations we propose a model of the modern evolution of BDX. We also suggest several ideas for further research on BDX.
