Effects of patients' behavioral intention on the adoption of medical apps from a technological readiness perspective

A growing number of patients manage their health conditions using medical apps. Interprofessional research on apps is emerging, and this research could have a tremendous effect on clinical practice. Therefore, the present study examined the factors affecting patients' behavioral intention to adopt medical apps. The research model combined the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, technology readiness levels, and attitude. A self-report questionnaire was used to collect data from patients in a hospital in Taoyuan. Among the 700 distributed questionnaires, 685 completed questionnaires were received. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling to test 14 research hypotheses; 12 of the hypotheses were supported. The empirical results revealed that (1) optimism, innovativeness, and insecurity are crucial components of technology readiness; (2) performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, and attitude significantly affect behavioral intention; (3) technology readiness significantly influence performance expectancy and effort expectancy. The results and findings are expected to contribute to clarifying patients' behavioral intentions for the adoption medical apps, which could help hospitals in the development of medical apps.
