EFL teachers' Perspectives on Selection and practice of English picturebooks at elementary schools in Taiwan

台灣小學英語教師對英語繪本選用和實踐的觀點

摘要


This study explores Taiwanese elementary school English teachers' personal views towards selecting English picturebooks as reading materials for use by third and fourth-grade students. A total of 14 elementary school English teachers in Taiwan who have already implemented English picturebooks as supplementary reading materials participated in this study. Two picturebooks selected for purposes of this study were presented to the participants: Rosie's Walk (1998) by Pat Hutchins and Amazing Grace (1991) by Mary Huffman. A semi-structured interview was conducted to determine teachers' considerations whenever selecting quality English picturebooks for instructional purposes. Primary consideration was given to picturebooks as classroom materials that conformed to the regular curriculum that matched foreign language proficiency to student capabilities, that contained far-reaching content areas, and that possessed attractive illustrations.

本研究探討台灣小學英語教師對於將英語繪本作為三年級和四年級學生的閱讀材料之個人觀點。共有14位已經將英語繪本作為補充閱讀材料的小學英語教師參與了本研究。研究選擇了兩本繪本:Rosie's Walk(1998)和Amazing Grace(1991),並透過半結構式訪談來探討教師在選擇優質英語繪本作為教學材料時的考量因素。研究主要將繪本視為符合常規課程、外語水平與學生能力相匹配、內容涵蓋範圍廣泛且插圖吸引人的課堂材料。
