A 33-year-old female patient was left with facial paralysis after receiving a parotidectomy (House-Brackman Grade IV). Seventy-eight days following her surgery, she visited Tainan Hospital Chinese Medicine Department for treatment of her paralysis. There, she received acupuncture and scientifically processed Chinese medicine in powder form. After nearly two months of treatment, her right eyebrows still felt somewhat stiff, but its function and appearance were found to be normal. Parotidectomy often causes facial nerve damage or paralysis. Few patients with postoperative facial nerve palsy receive Chinese medicine treatment. This patient recovered well after receiving Chinese medicine treatment (Chinese medicine and acupuncture). This report might serve as a useful reference the treatment of similar patients in the future.
