Japanese Writers' Feelings about Taiwan -Focused on "Jokaisen-kitan" by Haruo Sato and "Taiwankiko" by Hakusyu Kitahara

Among the inlander writers writing about Taiwan, such as Haruo Sato, Humiko Hayasi, Chihei Nakamura, Reiko Sakaguchi, Taku Oshika etc., Haruo Sato is the best-known for general readers in Taiwan. Haruo Sato used to visit in Taiwan over three months in 1920, and he created several novels as well as essays based on the experience of travelling in Taiwan, the most famous works are "Musya" and "Jokaisen-kitan" in Taiwan. Perhaps owing to its background of history, the reputation of semi-fictional "Jokaisen-kitan" seems far less than "Musya" with profound historical significance. In addition, Hakusyu Kitahara was an inlander writer who used to visit in Taiwan Kitahara and published essays such as "Jyokosai", Taipeihakujitsusobyo", "Taipeiyajyo" etc., based on this travelling experience in Taiwan and then he gathered all the sketches into a book of "Taiwankiko" to be published. Nevertheless, the number of the related research papers of "Taiwankiko" is extremely limited till now. Hakusyu Kitahara visited in Taiwan with an official invitation, while Haruo Sato visited in Taiwan due to personal reasons. Thus, the natural scenery what they saw and felt may be different somehow. The study aimed to explore the material of "Jokaisen-kitan" by Haruo Sato and make comparisons with the travel essay, "Taiwankiko", written by the writer Hakusyu Kitahara who visited in Taiwan based on an official invitation. Furthermore, the author examined whether the two writers had scruples about writing Taiwan in terms of the situations then as well as their visiting statuses. By means of the analysis of the texts, the study explored about the image of Taiwan in the creations and the feelings of the two writers toward Taiwan contained in the creations.
