Klinefelter syndrome, also known as 47,XXY, is a chromosomal abnormality distinguished by the presence of an additional X chromosome as opposed to the usual 46. Symptoms vary among patients and can be quite subtle until the teenage years with small testicles and delayed or incomplete puberty and possibly not even until adulthood with either oligospermia or azoospermia, decreased facial and body hair, and enlarged breasts and fat distribution resembling that of a female. Some people don't present with discernible symptoms at all and only discover this condition once they have married. Unsuccessful attempts to have children prompt medical examination as infertility tests reveal oligospermia or azoopsermia and chromosomal tests lead to the diagnosis of Klinefelter syndrome. The subject of this case report represents the latter scenario and applies the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) kidney-supplementing yang-warming therapeutic approach to promote gonadal development and sperm production in hopes of achieving the goal of conception.
