An Analytical Study of Low English Proficiency Learner's Learning Styles

The purpose of investigating the learning styles applied by low English proficiency learners is to help students understand what kind of learning approaches they are used to employing and what other methods they can still adopt to enhance their overall English learning. This paper presents qualitative and quantitative data as an evaluation of the initial implementation of the project. Forty-five subjects took part in the study and filled out a questionnaire about their learning habits and daily activities. Paired samples t-test was used to statistically analyze the students' answers to the five-point Likert scale questions. After the subjects had a full time job as garage mechanic, they listen to significantly much less English than they used to, and writing seems to be the most trouble-making and the least willingly effort-taken skill. Results indicated that their occupational experiences had to some extent an impact on some of the approaches they apply to English learning and would very likely affect their learning access, efficiency and performance. But their main learning style seems to remain visual. This study opened discussions and proposed suggestions for utilizing these findings with low English proficiency learners.
