In this study, we conducted semi structured interviews with high school baseball players from Y High School and collected documentary data on the socioeconomic and social class of the participants' families. Using the concepts of capital and class in Bourdieu's class theory and Goldthorpe's classification scheme for social class, we analyzed the social classes of the participants' families and the effect of education and cultural capital on the participants' future development and motivation to engage in sports. We classified the socioeconomic and social classes of the families of 18 high school baseball players. We then performed a content analysis on the motivation and self-positioning of the participants and their parents' expectations of them through the perspective of social class theory. Our results indicated that most respondents came from families in the middle and lower social classes of the socioeconomic ladder. However, some families had a contradictory class position (i.e., having different social class versus socioeconomic class); this indicates that class is not absolute, in contrary to class theory. Parents' expectations for the future of their children are predominantly based on respecting the child's wishes and wishing for them to complete their education. Overall, our conclusions are consistent with those of previous studies on class, sports, and social class theory, in which both rationality and team culture play a crucial role. We believe that this study contributes to efforts at tracking the status of high school athletes throughout their life course.
