This paper explores the employment of Modernist techniques in Li Yu's ”Night Harp”. ”Night Harp” is a typical modernist text, which uses a variety of Modernist techniques to achieve the objective of ”form echoing content”. In other words, Li Yu employs various Modernist techniques to demonstrate the trauma, desolation, and marginalization of the female protagonist in exile in Taiwan. Modernist techniques discussed in the paper include: narrative point of view, stream of consciousness, literary impressionism, simple story, discarding speech marks, short sentences and paragraphs, empty space, repetition, employment of symbolic methods, dream description, and ambiguous ending. Moreover, how form echoes content is also the focus of discussion.
