The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between high school athletes' identity and mental toughness, and to explore the mediating effect of internal motivation between athletes' identification and mental toughness. The effects of high school athletes' identity to internal motivation and internal motivation to mental toughness were analyzed by regression analysis. In addition, path analysis was implemented to investigate the mediation effect of internal motivation between high school athletes' identity and mental toughness. One hundred and seventy-seven valid questionnaires were collected via purposive sampling and descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze the data. The results and conclusions show that majority of the high school athletes were male, at the age of 16 ± 1.5. It also indicated that the high school athletes' identity influenced internal motivation significantly and the internal motivation influenced mental toughness significantly as well. The result of mediation effect represents that the internal motivation was mediating influence between high school athletes' identity and mental toughness. The high school athletes' identity influenced mental toughness directly by internal motivation.
