In this study, I take a further step to draw on Roland Barthes's Semiology methodologically to analyze the presentation and symbolic meaning of food in Marsha Norman's Night, Mother: with food as a material means to internalize the roles' character and the ideology of the play.Researchers of semiotics usually analyze drama texts through the concepts of ”metonymy” and ”metaphor,” to complete internal analysis of a text. In particular, I will analyze the mode of operation in 'Night, Mother, how the foods are symbolic, and why the dramatist places sweets throughout the play as a representation of the mother's control and oppression of her daughter, Jessie. In other words, the food in 'Night, Mother serves as a signifier, referential out to a variety of aspects referring to the signified. Through the foods in the play, I intend to present a different look at the dramatist's text by exploring the meaning behind the foods that seem trivial at first sight.
