The research of young carers supporting their parent has been developed in Taiwan. There remains relatively limited research on young carers providing long-term emotional support for a mentally ill parent. This study adopted a qualitative method, exploring the retrospective experiences of adults who were young carers encountering difficulties in providing emotional support for a mentally ill parent and wishes for social support throughout childhood. Findings indicated that the participants had complex feelings when witnessing the parent having uncontrollable emotions and behaviors, experiencing the process of being emotionally unavailable to their parent, and the participants described dealing with family emergency as great challenging, with an impact on parent-child relationship and school life. This study suggests first, children services providing suitable services for young carers; second, bolstering school support and public education; third, social welfare systems and policymakers ensuring to meet the social needs of young carers and their families. It is hoped that young carers and their families are being recognized their unmet needs and ensure them to have access to mainstream resources which they require.
