A study on display design of historic space: Take the songshan cultural and creative park (Example of Taiwan design museum and north tobacco factory)

The purpose of usage of a historical building and its ancillary spaces constantly change over time. Such a building or space may need to be maintained, demolished, or rebuilt. Under urban renewal projects nowadays, the most popular solution is to preserve the original building and renovate it with some demonstration features into a space, for example, for academic presentation, design contest, or product promotion. The challenge then is to use display design to effectively create a link to the past, in view of all the inherent limitations within the historical space. Nevertheless, display design adopted in these cases normally involve only routine arrangements, such as combinations of booths, display panels, and exhibition racks, to present the exhibit themes. This study aims to explore display design for monuments and review literatures on transformation of the like. By comparing Tobacco Factory in the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park with representative cases, it is to analyze the commonly-used display techniques and simulate how a design may come to life, so as to provide curators and designers who need to hold exhibitions here some ideas about weaving the history of the space into the event planning. Three factors for consideration: 1. preservation of the original space, 2. integration of individual elements, and 3. interaction in presentation. The goal is to balance the need for monument preservation and the leeway for exhibition curation and, eventually, bring about more alternative display design within spaces of historic significance.
