流動的形式:中國裝飾對英國美術工藝運動的影響

The Influence of Chinese Decorative Arts on the Arts and Crafts Movement

摘要


對於現代設計史的書寫,英國美術工藝運動(The Arts and Crafts Movement)向來被視為揭開序幕的一章。扮演促成這個運動的風格來源,除了英國本地中世紀的工藝傳統外,不論是近東的伊斯蘭地區,抑或是遠東的日本,皆被視為影響此時美術工藝風格表現的重要因素,然而向來佔據東西藝術交流重要角色的中國藝術,卻甚少被提及或注意。本文從裝飾的角度出發,以英國美術工藝運動的重要成員歐文瓊斯(Owen Jones)為中心,探討中國紋飾對此時設計作品所造成的可能影響。這樣的討論,不僅提出了中國紋飾應用在英國設計的實例,亦間接指明了英國對東亞文物收藏的歷史,以及設計師如何面對這批文物的態度。這種認知在裝飾設計的持續建構之下,逐漸讓形式的網絡流動益見明朗,也讓我們重新認識東、西方交流上的設計形態。

Most discussions of modern design's historiography start from the Arts and Crafts Movement. The sources and early ideas of these were inspired by Britain's traditional medieval arts as well as the decorations from the Near East such as Islamic regions and the Far East, such as Japan. The Chinese arts played a significant role in the long-term mingling of Eastern and Western arts, yet this is absent in the review of the Arts and Crafts Movement. From the perspective of decorations, this paper centers on Owen Jones to illustrate the influences of the Chinese decorative arts on the Arts and Crafts Movement. It gives examples of how British design used Chinese ornaments, and it uncovers a history of a collection of Far Eastern treasures in the United Kingdom and the history of British designers' acceptance of Chinese ornaments. Through this paper's exploration, another aspect is offered for constructing the history of modern design between the East and the West.
