Ignoring the Animus/Anima at One's Peril: Application of Mythological and Jungian Archetypal Approaches in John Fowles' The Collector

摘要

約翰．傅敖斯是二十世纪六十年代英國文壇脱穎而出的一顆璀璨的明珠。他的作品雅俗共賞，深得讀者喜愛，並融合傳統與創新、嚴肅與娛樂以及歷史與現實。本文嘗試用榮格的原型理論，透過分析其《蝴蝶春夢》文本，揭示作品中的主角人格發展的過程。在《蝴蝶春夢》中的男主角佛德烈．克萊格在個體化進程中，不能夠掙脱其陰影和阿尼瑪原型的束縛，因此在小說的結尾，未能獲得自我實現。

This paper intends to interpret Fowles' The Collector inwardly to show the archetypal patterns of the personalities of the characters by analyzing the text via Carl Jung's theory of archetypes. For example, the protagonist of The Collector, Frederick Clegg, is unable to adapt to the modern, real world. He lives in a world of dreams and fantasies, an Eden complete with malicious Serpent. He believes that he can build a parallel world for himself and Miranda, where they can live happily together as husband and wife. In a destructive sense, Clegg is confined to his shadow and anima and fails to achieve self-realization.
