Archetypal theory helps comprehend literature in a very different way. The theory helps uncover unconscious wishes that are included in tales. The purpose of this study is to analyze tales by applying archetypal theory. This study chooses five stories for examination. These five stories are Aylesworth's (2001) (retold) The Tale of Tricky Fox, Kennedy's (2006) Pirate Pete's Giant Adventure, Appleby's (1984) (illustrated) The Three Billy-Goats Gruff: A Norwegian Folktale, McGovern's (1968) Stone Soup, and Yamada's (1960) (illustrated) Three Little Pigs: A Traditional English Folktale. An investigation of these five chosen tales reveals the unconscious wishes of pride, greed, and gluttony. These discoveries can provide chances for a person to relate to these unconscious wishes so that he or she may understand himself or herself better. More tales should be examined to discover unconscious wishes that are embedded into stories. Thus, a person can continue to have opportunities to grow.
