Comparative Research on Dunhuang Vulgar Fu "Yake" and Song-Yuan Story-telling Script "Careless Clatterer Li Cuilian"

Dunhuang vulgar Fu (a Chinese literary form) ”Yake” (Virago) in the Tang Dynasty tells a story of a newly-wed bride who fought with her husband's family and decided to dissolve the marriage. The story was then expanded into Careless Clatterer Li Cuilian, a popular story-telling script in the Song and Yuan Dynasties. Although Yake and Careless Clatterer Li Cuilian fall into various genres and are also different in form and structure, it can be discerned that the ideas are similar. The characters depicted in both stories are somewhat related, with the earlier work influencing the later work. Such a link is of research interest. Hence, this research compares and contrasts the two works from five perspectives: genre, plot, main concept, character depiction, and techniques of expression to explore how Careless Clatterer Li Cuilian, derived from Yake, has delivered a more diversified and detailed interpretation of the lives of traditional Chinese women.
