Outcome Based Undergraduate Social Work Education in a Hong Kong University: A Case Study

Continued review and assessment of the outcomes of social work education is deemed necessary because of the rapid changes in society. This will ensure our social work students to be equipped with appropriate attitudes, values, skills and knowledge to address the challenges brought by the ever-changing social and political contexts, and to help the deprived and disadvantaged solve various ill-defined individual, family and community problems. This paper aims to report the finding generated from a qualitative study of analyzing the views of a total of 20 social work students, employers, and graduates on the relative importance of learning outcomes from an undergraduate social work program of a Hong Kong university. It is hoped that their perspectives can help inform how the curriculum can better prepare beginning social workers for acquiring essential skills and knowledge for future employment. Findings from the focus group interviews indicated that they were generally satisfied with the way how social work training was delivered through the university being investigated. However, most participants commented that many social work students and its graduates were not particularly interested in using research evidence to inform their practice, and lacked confidence in policy and advocacy work. They suggested that the curriculum should have aimed at improving the student's critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to prepare them to deal with the ever-changing needs of the vulnerable. Despite its small scale, this case study demonstrates how the importance of using research to help assess the strengths and weaknesses of the social work curriculum, thereby identifying room for improvement in the delivery of social work education.
