The residents of Kume Village of Ryukyu Kingdom are descendants of Chinese emigrants who moved from Fujian province in the Ming dynasty. Historically, Kume villagers have played an important role in trade and diplomatic relations between China and Ryukyu, and they were responsible for the creation and publication of much Ryukyu Chinese poetry. Anthologies by Ryukyu poets were published in Beijing and Fuzhou in China, and Kyoto, Edo, and Osaka in Japan. The present essay is a study of the publication culture of Ryukyu. It examines the publication activities of Kume villagers, especially the publication situations of Chinese poetry anthologies, recognizing and evaluating their historical significance in cultural exchange in the marine areas of East Asia.
