EFL Students' Perceptions of Western Culture Learning through Music Videos

The research into culture and language pedagogy has developed for decades. Various types of cultural materials have been used by language educators. Applying YouTube videos as cultural materials are relatively insufficient, especially using music videos (MVs) which are entertaining, much shorter than general films or videos, but contain theme-specific culture information and images responding to lyrics. The purposes of this study were to investigate the students' perceptions of this entertaining approach as well as their general approaches to culture learning. The participants were 43 university freshmen. The instruments were seven MVs of the Christmas theme. An open-ended questionnaire was designed to elicit their reflections on western culture learning through watching the MVs. The results revealed that MV watching was rarely used in western culture learning but TV was the most commonly used medium. 93% of the participants expressed their better understanding of western Christmas culture through MVs, implying its highly positive effect. Moreover, 88% of them preferred this approach. These findings may provide noticeable information in western culture learning to both EFL teachers and students.
