Translation as Intervention in the Age of Cold War: Study on the Translators of New Tide Library, 1967-1980

Chih-wen Press is the first translation publisher in Taiwan, and its branch New Tide Library is known as the best translators. This paper focuses on examining the New Tide Library of Chinese translated books published by Chih-wen Press during 1967 to 1980. Moreover, the translations are taken as a medium of the way how translators interpret literature and culture. The whole process of translation can be divided into three parts. First, the New Tide Library combined the history of May Fourth Movement in China and the colonial experience of Japan in Taiwan in the 1930s through ”the double translation process”. Second, corresponding to the cold war and the period of martial law, the translations intend to avoid the left-wing ideas by translating the similarities and differents of culture in order to highlight anti-communist topics. Third, the translators show their anxienty to knowledge when translating, which is also seen as a literary criticism. In short, this paper aims to explore the significance of the cultural translation of New Tide Library of Chih-wen Press in the 1970s.
