NAFTA and Its Effects on Brazil's Perception of South America

並列摘要

The establishment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994 played a fundamental role on Brazil's perspective and behavior towards the United States' proposition concerning the creation of a free trade area covering the whole American hemisphere. This article covers basic historical aspects of the Brazilian perception of the South American space and seeks to show how the models of both NAFTA and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) -proposed by the United States in 1998- were in opposition to the Brazilian idea of regional integration and to the role the Brazilian government considered the country could play in South America.
