A Visit to the Gifted Education Program in Taipei Municipal Jianguo Senior High School

Taipei Municipal Jianguo High school has been a pioneer and beacon for the middle schools in Taiwan. It was first founded in 1898 during the Japanese colonial period and had its named changed into the current one in 1967. In September, 1983, Jianguo High School was allowed to run a experimental gifted educational program. In 2001, the Class for the Math and Science Gifted and the Class for the Mandarin Chinese Gifted were oficially founded, and in 2007, the Class for Humanities and Social Sciences Gifted was also founded. Currently, there are two classes for the Math and Science Gifted and one class for Humanities and Social Sciences Gifted in each grade at Jianguo. The affairs regarding the gifted education are conducted by the special education section in the Office of Academic Affairs. In the gifted education program, the courses are designed to be student-centered, including the Introduction of the Classic Works, Independent Study, Overseas Visits, Service learning, and so on. At the end of this report, a survey on the thoughts of students in the gifted education program is included, with an attempt to study into the challenges the gifted students may be experiencing. It is hoped that students' reflections can help teachers to better conduct their future courses. It is also hoped that with the brief introduction of the gifted education in Jianguo, the public could get to more clearly understand the aim and future prospects of the gifted education, with less misunderstanding and more involvement, for the further and better development of the gifted education in Taiwan.
