Top-off pruning with two lateral buds left uncut was exercised on different dates, 8 May (treatment A), 25 May (treatment B), 9 June (treament C), 27 June (treatment D) in 1995, to compare its effect on the flowering of loquat. Conventional pruning (treatment E) was adopted as a control. It was demonstrated that the flowering rates for treatments A, B, C, D, and E, were 89.9%, 95.6%, 97.5%, 87.2%, and 81.6%, respectively. Since two lateral buds were left uncut in t tresatments A, B, C, and D, the relative values of flowering for those treaments were 1.435, 1.778, 1.775, and 1.596, respectively, which were higher than for treatment E, which was 0.86. Our study suggests that top-off pruning during May and June results in an increase in flowering rates of vigorously developmental branches and the relative values of flowering of the treated loquat plants can be promoted to be double thosee from conventional management. Accordingly, the yield of treated plants would be expected to be increase significantly.
