Objective: In order to reduce the number of needlestick injuries among medical center nursing staff, this study analyzed 61 cases of needlestick injuries that occurred at a certain medical center in 2019. Causes included: incorrect handling of sharps, inadequate knowledge of needlestick injury prevention, staff's belief that needlestick injury prevention is unimportant, lack of hands-on training in needlestick injury prevention, lack of assessment mechanisms for new personnel, and unanticipated patient movement. Methods: Project committee members employed the following needlestick injury prevention strategies: developing a poster design competition about safety culture and needlestick injury prevention, designing simulation training for needlestick injury prevention, and planning regular assessment mechanisms for new personnel. Results: Needlestick injuries among nursing staff decreased from 61 to 40 cases, which more than meets the target. Conclusions: Implementing needlestick injury prevention measures, creating a culture of safety, and promoting simulation training can effectively reduce needlestick injuries among nursing staff, thus improving workplace safety for this group.
