Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage one's own thoughts, emotions, and actions. It is the process through which an individual sets a clear and feasible target, employs effective strategies, and continuously adjusts their behavior through self-monitoring, self-reaction, and self-judgment, comparing effects of their actions on the actual environment with their desired target. Behavior changes that affect the physical, psychological, and social well-being are strongly influenced by the environment. Self-regulation skills enable individuals to review their own motivations, beliefs, knowledge, and actions. As a result, they are able to adopt adaptive behaviors and achieve a balance between their body, mind, and role in society. There is plenty of relevant literature at home and abroad that explores the correlation between and influence of the self-regulation model and theory on diseases, but there have been no studies that analyze the concept of self-regulation systematically so far. Therefore, in this article, we employ the concept analysis method developed by Walker and Avant (2019) to integrate the literature on self-regulation, confirm the purpose of such concept analysis, identify relevant concepts, explore defining attributes, and clarify the core concept through typical, edge, and opposite case illustration. We also identify the antecedents and consequences of self-regulation as well as empirical referents. Through this article, we hope to help nurse practitioners obtain a more accurate understanding of the core concept of self-regulation. This should enable them to provide proper intervention and programs to patients in a clinical setting, strengthen patients' coping and adaptive abilities during survivorship to ensure a prompt recovery and mind-body balance, and potentially conduct nursing research based on the self-regulation model in the future.
