The Statecraft (Jing-Shi) strand of traditional Chinese thought, as distinct from Western political theories, proposes that people should devote themselves to political life based on their accumulation of knowledge and cultivation of morality. After honing its personal moral standing, the individual joins society and finally dedicates itself to the ordering of the world by serving the empire.Studies of Statecraft theories began in the 1980s as scholars attempted to elucidate the correlation between China's modernization and traditional thought by analyzing the definition as well as the meaning of Statecraft as found in the Ming dynasty's ”Jing Shi Wen Bian”. This article focuses on Taiwanese and Chinese studies concerning the ”Jing Shi Wen Bian” of the Ming-Qing period. During the last decade two main topics emerged, namely the idiosyncracies of ”Jing Shi Wen Bian” compilations, and the impact brought about by this intellectual trend. By summarizing and commenting on these studies the interrelation between ”Jing Shi Wen Bian” and contemporary intellectuals, their thoughts as well as society in general is shown.
