The Era's Light and Shadow of Hu Lien and the Raging Tide School: Chou Ya-Chuan and Hsu Song-Tsen's Stories

In 1949, the peace talks between the government of the Republic of China and the Communist Party of China failed, and the Chinese People's Liberation Army marched across the country. The situation was overwhelming and invincible. At this time, Hu Lien implemented ancient fubing militia system in Jiangxi to collect 100,000 new troops and 1,500 students. The Twelfth Corps and the Raging Tide School formed, and with the sentiments about dynastic changeover, they followed the integrity of Jiangxi sage Wen Tianxiang, and went all out to slash a path to Taiwan. As soon as the Twelfth Corps left mainland China, they entered the defense battles of Kinmen and Zhoushan, won a great victory, stabilized the situation of the Taiwan Strait, and led to the separation of Taiwan from China. Hu Lien guarded Kinmen for a long time. In 1958, he won the 823 Artillery Bombardment. The strong defense of national front was in exchange for the stability and prosperity of Taiwan. Under the protection of the Corps, the students of the Raging Tide School settled in Xinpu Town, Hsinchu County. With the self-expectation of new Huangpu Military Academy, the Raging Tide School made arduous efforts to train and learn, and moved to Kinmen one year later. The students of the Raging Tide School who were well versed in both polite letters and martial arts were the human resources bank of military and political cadres trained by Hu Lien for the state reconstruction during the civil war before the reestablishment of the Republic of China Military Academy in Taiwan. This article uses the life stories of Chou Ya-Chuan, a student of the Raging Tide School and Hsu Song-Tsen, a fighter of the Twelfth Corps to reflect the history of the Hu Lien Corps and the Raging Tide School in time of trouble. Their exile, separation, sacrifice, and suffering are Taiwan's national memories and should be remembered and chanted forever.
