Effect of Iron Ore Waste Addition on the Properties and Microstructure of Clayey Ceramic

並列摘要

The objective of this work is to characterize and evaluate the effect of incorporation of an iron ore waste on the properties and microstructure of a clayey ceramic body used to fabricate bricks and roofing tiles. Characterization tests of the waste were performed by means of X-ray diffraction, chemical composition, particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal analysis. Formulations were prepared with additions of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 wt.% of waste into a kaolinitic clayey body from Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil. To determine the technological properties related to the linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural strength, specimens were press-molded at 20 MPa and then fired at 700, 900 and 1100oC. The microstructure of the fired specimens was evaluated by SEM. The results showed that incorporations of up to 10 wt. % of fine iron ore waste are beneficial to the ceramic body, while higher amounts cause deleterious effects on the mechanical strength and porosity.
