並列摘要

The aims of this study were (a) to know the association between participation in leisure activities and Alzheimer's Disease (AD); (b) to compare the level of participation in leisure activities through life between AD patients and healthy elderly. The sample comprised sixty patients diagnosis as probable AD recruited at a psychiatric hospital and thirty healthy elderly. The diagnoses were made according to standard diagnostic criteria and all participants were submitted to a functional and neuropsychological evaluation and they answered a questionnaire about participation in leisure activities. The patients group got the lowest rates of participation in leisure activities throughout life comparing with the control group. The data suggest that engagement in leisure activities may protect against the development of dementia or it may hinder cognitive decline.
