An Approach to a General Curriculum Design and Content Selection Based On Shipping Industry

摘要

General Curriculum consists of basic knowledge and network of a subject discipline, it has the potential to enhance learner's comprehensive knowledge and thinking which all college students are required to attend while the professional courses request a further command of specific knowledge. When it comes to shipping, studies shew that the specific knowledge would be broken into unrelated fractions and lead to a lack of comprehensive knowledge in certain domain hindering students from solving practical issues while designing the course generally may lose its focus as a professional subject. Approaches in terms of General Course design were seldom used in such courses as shipping. Related shipping research tended to be narrowly focused upon specific skills and comprehensive knowledge were neglected. Further, Modularity performed well in combining 'general' and 'specific' in some subject disciplines like language courses. The findings proposed and practiced, therefore, a General Course of shipping management comprised of eight Modules to maximize the effectiveness of General Curriculum based on shipping industry with the idea of Modularity.
