Experimental Infection of Mosquito with Subperiodic Filarial Brugia Malayi

To realize the susceptibility of mosquitoes to subperiodic filarial Brugia malayi, 16 species belonging to 6 genera were studied in the laboratory. These mosquitoes included Aedes (Ae.) aegypti, Ae. Albolineatus, Ae. albopictus, Ae.. japonicas, Ae malikuli, Ae. Togoi, Anopheles (An.) quadrimaculatus, An. sinensis, An. stephensis, Armygerus (Ar.) flavus, Ar. subalbatus, Culex (Cx.) alis, Cx. quinquefasciatus, Cx. tritaeneiorhynchus, Mansonia (Ma) uniformis, and Tripteroides bambusa. Totally 1,724 female adults of the mosquitoes were permitted to feed on the rats or gerbils that had been infected with subperiodic filarial B. malalyi. These rats or gerbils were found to be loaded with the microfilaria (mf) of B. malayi at the density of 10~20 mf/cm2 approximately in peripheral blood. Ten or fourteen days after blood feeding 1,254 mosquitoes were finally dissected and examined the development of microfilaria. The third-stage infective larvae of B. malayi were recovered from 122 mosquitoes in 5 species, namely Ma. uniformis, Ae. togoi, An. sinensis, Liverpool strain Ae. aegypti and Ar. subalbatus. The susceptibility for these 5 species were 62.5%, 38.3%, 37.5%, 35.4% and 0.3%, respectively. Conclusively, the first 4 species, Ms. uniformis, Ae. togoi, An. sinensis and Liverpool strain of Ae. aegypti are considered as a good vector for B. malalyi. On the other hand, Ar. subalbatus is a poorly efficient vector in the transmission of this parasite.
