Use of complementary and alternative medicine for the management of HIV/AIDS: a psychoneuroimmunology perspective

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has gained popularity among patients with various disorders, especially in relieving both physical and mental symptoms caused by chronic diseases. People living with HIV infection are of no exception. CAM has been used to alleviate discomfort associated with the disease, to reduce distress arising from unwanted side effect of treatment, and to improve the overall health conditions. Non-invasive mind-body interventions, such as prayer or relaxing techniques, are less likely to cause adverse interactions with conventional medical therapy compared with other biologically based treatments such as herbs and dietary supplements. Nevertheless, what is the possible mechanism that could explain the beneficial effects of mind-body CAM on patients' health? The present study, using the perspective of psychoneuroimmunology, reviewed the research conducted on cognitive-behavioral stress management and mindfulness-based stress reduction in people living with HIV.
