甲苯經觸媒氧化反應,可得聚合物,其分子量約為770~1020,即聚合度約為8~1。苯及甲苯經鈷六十珈瑪線照射,無論照射前後加入觸蝶及氧化劑與否,對聚合之影響均甚微。苯聚合物僅稍溶於熱酚,不溶於一般溶劑。甲苯聚合物,除溶於熱苯及甲苯外,在一般溶劑中之溶解度均甚小。
With catalyst and oxidant, toluene was polymerized. The molecular weight of the resulting polymer was found between 770 and 1020, i. e. t he polymerization degree 8 and 11. Radiolysis of benzene and toluene. however, with addition of catalyst and oxidant before or after irradiation, or, without addition, existed very slight influence on polymerization. The benzene polymer was insoluble in common solvents but slightly soluble in hot phenol. The toluene polymer was soluble in hot benzene and toluene, slightly soluble in common solvents, but insoluble in n-hexane and water.
