摘要


本文報導碟狀液晶之最新進展,根據結構之不同,碟狀液晶化合物一般可分成具有柱狀型以及向列型液晶相之兩大類碟狀液晶。在柱狀型碟狀液晶相中,碟狀分子上下相互重疊形成二維柱狀晶格結構,而在向列型碟狀液晶相中,碟狀分子則排列成一維規則結構。本文為報導小分子碟狀液晶化合物及碟狀液晶高分子之化學結構與所形成液晶性質之關係,同時也討論碟狀液晶在作為液晶顯示器光學補償膜、導電性材料、離子導體以及有激發光二極體等方面之應用潛力。

Progress in the field of discotic liquid crystals is briefly discussed. The liquid cr ystal phases exhibited by most discotic liquid crystalline molecules, according to the packing characteristic between the molecules, fall into two distinct categories: the more ordered columnar mesophase with specific order exists between individual columns, and the liquid-like nematic mesophase possessed only one dimensional order. This rev iew article described the structure properities of both low molar mass discotic liquid crystals and discotic liquid crystal polymers. The formation of the discotic liquid cry stalline mesophase is severely restricted by factors such as : proper number of flexible side chains attached to the main core, the suitable configuration of the main core and the branch on the flexible side chains. Their potential application in the field of optical compensat ion films for wild viewingangle liquid crystal displays, conducting materials , ionic conductor and organic LED are also discussed.
