Blood substitutes offer the ability to carry oxygen to hypoxic tissues in emergencies where blood is not available. When the clinical trials are available, the development will be accelerated for transfused products. Three general classes of blood substitutes, which are based on hemoglobin, immunocamouflaged erythrocytes, and perfluorocarbons. The article briefly introduces the clinical development and the application of blood substitutes.
