Introduction to Fluorescence and Phosphorescence before the Rise of Quantum Mechanics

摘要


螢光(fluorescence)與磷光(phosphorescence)是「光致發光」的兩種型式,常被使用在當代的研究與實際的應用上。在量子力學出現之前,早期對這兩種現象的研究著重在發光機制的探討。與白熾光不同,「光致發光」不需要高溫也不發出大量的熱。這樣的一個“冷光"在19世紀時,曾是科學家爭論的焦點,例如,這樣的現象與熱力學相符嗎?本篇文章會描述一些早期螢光的應用,例如:螢光棒、螢光分析、螢光追蹤劑等。

Two types of photoluminescence, fluorescence and phosphorescence, are demonstrated in this paper. Before the rise of quantum mechanics, scientists pay lots of attention on the understanding of their emission mechanism. Photoluminescence does not need high temperature and does not release a lot of heat in opposition to incandescence. In this article, some early applications of fluorescence, for example, fluorescent tube, fluorescence analysis, and fluorescent tracers are described.
