在過往的研究中，我們往往把宗室視為一個群體，認為所有宗室都是一體的，但是事實上真的是這樣嗎？宗室內部應當與其他學術所討論的群體一樣，有親疏高低之分，因此應剛將宗室分類並討論，本文以東漢為例。
