Testing the reliability and validity of limited stability of a newly developed dynamic standing board

Purpose: This study aimed to test the reliability and validity of limits of stability (LOS) of a newly developed dynamic standing board. Method: 35 healthy participants were enrolled and completed three balance tests, Multi-directional Reach Test (MDRT), MDRT on dynamic standing board (DSB_MDRT), and LOS test using Biodex Balance System (BBS). For test-retest reliability, DSB_MDRT was tested two sessions one week apart. The distance of maximal reaches with the outstretched arm to three directions were recorded during two MDRTs, and directional control was derived by BBS. Intraclass correlation coefficient was calculated for assessing test-retest reliability of DSB_MDRT, and Pearson´s correlation coefficient was used to test the correlations among all outcome measures. Results: DSB_MDRT showed moderate test-retest reliability for three test directions, and the scores of DSB_MDRT and MDRT showed positive moderate correlations. The result may suggest dynamic standing board is a reliable tool for measuring the postural stability in clinics.
