A Naughty Child in Apocalypse: Wang Siren as a master of bantering

The lifetime of Wang Siren (1572-1646) overlapped with the fierce factional struggle between Donglin literati and the clique of eunuch Wei Zhongxian in Late Ming. He not only steered clear of the factional struggle at court to preserve his moral integrity, but treated his official duties, trivial affairs, travels, and literary creation with an attitude of indulgently ridicule and unrestraint. He derided and scolded throughout his life, "talk banteringly, walk banteringly, write banteringly", thus creating his own unique brand in late Ming literary field. Taken together from his poems and essays, and the evaluation of him by contemporaries and posterity, this bantering style was not only nurtured by the spirit of his time and the regional culture of his birthplace, but originated from his literary knowledge and humorous personality, thus becoming a survival method in a turbulent social atmosphere, and reflecting the "entertaining the universe" philosophy of life of a late Ming scholar-official.
