Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is emerging, which attracts increasing attention internationally. The aims of this research are to examine the implementation of ESD at higher education level, and to identify its potentials and challenges in future practices. This paper is constituted by three sections. First, the origin and international background of ESD will be introduced. The significance of ESD will also be elucidated. Second, practices of ESD in higher education will be examined, which includes universities both in western countries and in Taiwan. Based on this review and comparison, some ideas of strategies for integrating ESD intoTaiwanese universities are suggested. Third, according to concepts and the current trend on ESD in higher education, in attempt to develop future visions of ESD, the author suggests four aspects to be considered.
