Using event-related spectral perturbation analysis to examine aggressive behavior in adolescents in reform school with drug abuse

Drug addiction is a world-wide source of major concern, not least in terms of effects on social security, and the association between drug addiction and aggressive behavior is still unclear. In this study, the Taylor Aggression Paradigm (TAP), which is designed to simulate real situations of social interaction to elicit aggressive behavior and negative emotions, along with EEG recording, was used to investigate the differences between adolescents with drug abuse (experimental group) and normal adolescents (control group) in terms of inhibitory control, error monitoring and the ability to regulate aggressive behavior. The behavioral data from the TAP showed that the mean punishment given was significantly higher for the experiment group than for the control group. ERP data showed that theta activity of the decision phase and the result phase, potentially indicative of inhibitory control, was lower in the experimental group than in the control group. This is consistent with a link between drug addiction and worse negative emotion regulation in young people, with this potentially leading to highly aggressive behavior.
