By tracking and conducting in-depth interviews with female drug offenders and observing their courses of persistence and desistance in crime, this research will analyze the roles of these three parts: stress and coping, informal social control, and opportunity factors in criminal careers. Through the in-depth interviews with 6 female probationers (3 repeat offenders and 3 offenders desisting from crime) from 2000 to 2010, the results show that those who desist from crime tend to cope with stress positively and actively. Also, they have a supportive family who can offer effective and informal social control. They have the characteristics to do structured routine activities and to disown deviant peers. Economy and employment are common sources of stress of re-entry. The resources and support from native and nuclear family helps to prevent consistent drug use. Owing to lack of a structured lifestyle and deviant peers, some offenders consistently use drugs. Suggestions based on research findings are discussed.
