SDN-based Intelligent Firewalls and Load Balancers for Cloud Services

並列摘要

NTU Computer and Information Networking Center has started to provide cloud services for schools whose Internet access services are supported by Taipei Network Regional Center of Taiwan Academic Network since January 2015. Up until June 2016, eighteen units have been set up to support 162 virtual hosts in our cloud environment. Issues such as energy saving, security, load balancing, etc. are keys to the success of cloud services. In this paper, we study the use of Software Defined Networking (SDN) to build intelligent firewalls and load balancers for cloud services. To prevent Internet intrusions, SDN allows abnormal packets to be blocked automatically in a few minutes, as opposed to hours if blocking is carried out using the traditional methods. To support cloud services effectively, it is often desirable to use a load balancer to distribute workloads across multiple servers. In order to improve overall service availability and responsiveness, load balancing becomes critical for cloud platforms such as the Taipei CooC-cloud which serves thousands of students in Taipei city. In our design, we employ an SDN-based load balancer to improve service quality in our cloud computing environment.
