Over the past two or three decades, there has been increasing concern about the danger of extinction of many plant and animal species. With this rise in awareness has come the establishment of associations and groups for the protection of endangered species that work on an international level, and which seek to implement conventions and regulations in the hope of preventing the degradation of this situation. Among these international protection conventions, the most well known and enforced is the "Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)". Professionals in the museum field must understand the wide-ranging implications of this Convention, especially when international loans and exhibit objects are involved. This article provides an introduction to the CITES Convention from the perspective of museums engaging in international loans of exhibit objects.
