In the 1990s, the Yilan County Government launched a daring scheme to establish the Lanyang Museum. The innovative concept of eco museum was adopted as the preferred model. The Lanyang Museum and Yilan museums have worked hand in hand to create a new cooperative format among museums within a single geographic region in Taiwan. As a result, the Yilan Museums Association was formed in 2001. Although the development of this organization has not progressed very smoothly over the past decade, its deep involvement in the local cultural movement has resulted in a pioneering example for the development of community museums in Taiwan. This is a study of "place". It examines the development of eco museums in Yilan during the period from 2001 to 2011. By analyzing the social and cultural links of Yilan museums with their local communities, museum expansion and future feasibility are discussed. The core issues include the concept of eco museum, sense of place and community in action (Yilan museums). Through the author's personal participation in the management of the Yilan Museums Association, qualitative methodology is employed to analyze how this organization influences the local cultural development.
