In the practice of preservation of historic sites in Taiwan, there are many issues worth further study. An example is the activation of cultural heritage to facilitate further use of cultural resources. This study focuses on the adaptive reuse of cultural heritage, specifically as museums or exhibition spaces. When a historic building is transformed into a museum, problems related to its restoration and maintenance, as well as the functions, demands, operations and management of the museum may occur. Cultural heritage possesses historical and cultural value, which often overlaps with the social communication intent of the museum conveyed through exhibitions and educational activities, such that the historic building itself becomes an exhibition subject. This study adopts a case study approach, supplemented by relevant regulations and rules, as well as theoretical concepts. Through empirical research and review of practices, from a museum’s spatial characteristics, curatorial orientation, educational programs, research focuses, collection directions and community relations, the aim of this study is to attempt to establish an analytical framework and provide references for revitalizing historic buildings for reuse as museums.
