The cataloguing of cultural objects is an important part of museum collections management. Collections grow through donations, purchases, transfers and other approaches. The accuracy and the supervision of the recording of data of cultural objects (including background information, metadata and research materials) determine the value of collections, and how they are used and applied in museums. In contrast to the field of library science, museums in Taiwan have not yet developed common guidelines for cultural object cataloging. The aim of this paper is to analyze the context of cultural object cataloging through a literature review of metadata standards in American museums. In addition, the National Museum of Taiwan History (NMTH) is taken as an example and the development of guidelines on cultural object cataloging in this museum is introduced in detail. Issues and lessons learned from the implementation of cultural object cataloging in the NMTH are also explored. Finally, standardization of cultural object cataloging guidelines should be considered in the further development of museum collections cataloging in Taiwan.
