The purpose of this paper is to discuss the similarities and divergences between the experience of Christian contemplation and Buddhist meditation. The first section of the paper explores the approaches and phases of Christian prayer. The second section introduces the Buddhist meditative disciplines and the various mystical stages identified in the meditative process. The last section explores the commonality and differences in the mystical experience of the Christian and Buddhist traditions in terms of four themes: 1. Mystical "darkness" and "emptiness;" 2. "Union with God" and "Oneness with the Universe;" 3. Silence in prayer and meditation; 4. Dangers of spiritual discipline.
